Wild Ginger Day Care
Enriching experiences for head, heart and hands
Maple Syrup SeasonAt the very end of winter, we pull the sleds along our maple syrup trail, visiting the trees and collecting sap from the buckets. We taste sap, suck on sap ice, and drink sap as we stop at each tree. We do a puppet play built around a song about going to the sugar camp that is based on a Chippewa melody. We set up our own "birch bark wigwam", like the one in the puppet play, and act out the song ourselves -- pretending to tap trees, collect and boil sap and make maple sugar. At the end of syrup season, we cook and eat pancakes with the maple syrup made from the sap we collected.
